내셔널의 2005년 앨범 <Alligator>의 마지막 곡이다. 영국에 있는 소속 레이블에서 11월에 자꾸 곡을 써내라고는 하는데, 쓸 곡이 도저히 생각이 안 나던 도중 마지막 순간에 써내린 곡이라고 한다. 매우 좋은 곡이었는데, 내셔널이 크게 인기가 있는 밴드가 아니었기 때문에 잊혀질 수도 있었다. 사실 그떄까지 내셔널은 방송 출현도 한 번 없었다.
이 곡이 뜬금없이 그나마 알려지게 된 까닭은 2007년 앨범 <Boxer>가 그럭저럭 성공을 거두고, 내셔널이 오바마의 선거를 도와주었기 때문이다. 물론 오바마의 선거를 도운 수많은 밴드 중의 한 밴드이긴 하다만. 그들은 미국을 시니컬하게 바라보는 듯한 곡인 'Fake Empire'와 이 곡을 자주 불렀다. 선거가 11월에 있기 때문이었다. 고로 오바마가 11월의 사나이가 될 것이다, 라는 말이었다.
내일은 대학수학능력시험이 있고, 수십만의 학생들이 시험을 본다. 가혹한 입시가 잘못된 것이라면, 당연 그 일부인 수능도 옳은 것일수는 없다. 그러나 수능이 그른 것이 수십만의 학생의 잘못은 전혀 아닌데다가, 그들이 힘들게 살아온 시간을 부정할 수는 없는 것이다. 모든 수험생에게 행운이, 솔직히 내가 아는 수험생들에게 살짝 더 행운이 따르기를 빈다. 수능은 늘 11월에 있었고, 그래서 이 곡을 골랐다. 11월의 사람들이 되기를!
